‘Hepatitis’ means ‘inflammation of the liver’. Your liver plays an important role in making your blood, getting rid of unwanted substances from the body, helping your body get the goodness from food and giving you energy.
The different types of hepatitis covered in this site are caused by different viruses that often cause similar symptoms and can be passed on in similar ways. But these viruses are completely different from each other and having had one (or being vaccinated against one) doesn’t protect you from the others.
All three kinds of hepatitis can make you very ill. For some people they can be fatal. But it’s possible to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B. Other precautions can stop hepatitis C being passed on.
