For more information about Terrence Higgins Trust's Hep ABC programme, please email Campbell Parker on campbell.parker@tht.org.uk Hep B Recall scheme – reminders by text message and email In mid-August 2003, Terrence Higgins Trust, in association with London’s Sorted clinics, launched a pilot scheme which may ultimately result in a larger proportion of the gay male population being fully vaccinated against hepatitis B. Around half of all gay men in the UK have been vaccinated against hepatitis B. Many of the remaining men will begin their vaccination course, but fail to complete it, leaving them without adequate immunity. Often, it is the far-spaced timings of the follow-up shots that prove to be problematic. These shots can be anywhere from one to six months apart, which (perhaps predictably) results in forgotten appointments and disrupted courses, sending the client back to square one. Traditional recall methods, such as letters, can be costly and time-consuming and have a low response rate. Hep B Recall is a new technology which reminds men about follow-up appointments while demanding little effort or time on the part of clinic staff. Text and email messaging Nearly everyone has a mobile phone and an email address. They constitute ideal media for sending reminder messages about vaccination appointments. Particularly in the case of mobile text, men are likely to pay more attention to a message than to a letter. The Recall scheme’s fully customisable web-based system sends out automatic messages to gay men’s mobile phones or email inboxes (or both), according to their preference. The timing of the reminders and their destinations are to the clinic’s specification, which under normal circumstances is simply based on client data input. The pilot period of the Hep B Recall is now over and Terrence Higgins Trust is pleased to be able to offer this system to all clinics in England and Wales. New clinics would be required to pay a small yearly subscription fee. The system is fully supported with a comprehensive user manual and email support.
